The month is October is when the Halloween parties take place. They are exciting time both for adults and kids. The day originated from the pagan holiday where they honored the dead. Of all the holidays in the Unites States, Halloween marks the best example of the typical American adaptation into the culture. Every 31st October, adults and children alike slip into the night resembling some of the scariest characters.
Some interesting beliefs about this celebration include:
• Children dressed in these costumes go from door to door asking for confectionary treats by calling out the question ‘trick or treat’. This is a threat to play a prank on the house owner or his property if no treat is given. Children are treated with candy if they go to the homes with a cause to collect money for the United Nations Children’s Fund. The money is given in lieu of or in addition to the candy. When making these visits, they are accompanied by an adult until they are old enough to do this on their own.
• Carving of pumpkins or making of O’ lanterns. The pumpkins are carved to resemble scary or comical figures and lit to highlight the design to give it more spookiness. Carving of lanterns is done traditionally to chase away evil spirits. This was done in the Irish culture.
• Attending of costume parties and contests dressed like vampires, witches, skeleton and others is in line with the belief that the spirits roamed freely among the living on this day. With people wearing these costumes, they confused the spirits to thinking that they were spirits as well.
This event is celebrated in very many ways apart from the scary costumes. Watching of horror movies and visiting haunted attractions is a popular modern notion to celebrate the evening. Some of the foods served during this event include candies apples, pumpkin dishes, pies and candies.
Safety precautions need to be observed during these events to prevent mishaps. Homes should be kept safe for children and candles should be handled with care. it is recommended that they should be replaced with glowing sticks. If candles have to be used, they should be placed far from curtains or any inflammable objects. Smoke and fire need to be monitored and a fire extinguisher should be on standby in case of an accident.
Halloween should be enjoyed with plenty of treats and tricks should be made to loved ones.
